How do we assign value to things? When is something worth preserving — and when is it discarded? These are questions that concern us all. Museums, however, carry a particular responsibility: to preserve objects on behalf of the wider community. Held in Trust invites you to look at everyday objects with fresh eyes and to reflect on how value is created, transformed, and sometimes lost.
This exhibition is the result of a collaborative project between students from the Art, Design and Architecture programme at Førde Upper Secondary School, Sunnfjord Museum, and Sogn og Fjordane Art Museum. Using old packaging and other reused materials as their point of departure, the students explore reuse both as an artistic practice and as part of local history and contemporary life.
Through encounters between the students’ works and selected objects and artworks from the collections of Musea i Sogn og Fjordane, the boundaries between waste and value are brought into question. The exhibition opens up an important conversation about value — what we choose to preserve, and why.
