Textiles have remained an important part of our culture, both as a practical material and as an art form. Colours, patterns and textures tell a story, while also expressing identity and creativity. In this exhibition you will meet several characters from the weaving and homecraft traditions in Jølster, and their links to the wider community. Links that have been important for employment, but not least for creative collaboration and continued settlement. The community the artists Nikolai Astrup and Ludvig Eikaas grew up in, and later influenced, provided livelihoods for women in the village.
Ålhus, the millennium-old town in the former Jølster municipality, with a church from 1795, has for many years been a hub for art, civil servants and development. It also houses one of the weaveries that inspired Astrup. With this exhibition, we want to take the audience on a journey linking people and communities, both locally and nationally
To tell some of these stories, we enter the homes that carried old traditions into more modern times. A number of women have played an important role, and the exhibition will tell their stories through their work:
Kathinka Lind
Magnhild Hegheim
Norun Øvrebø
Anne Lise V. Øvrebø
Andrea Sandnes
Ragna Hamar
Helga Hamar
Olina Fossheim
Sigrun Berg
Engel Astrup
Audhild Viken
Along the way, we follow Ludvig Eikaas' observations and compositions.
Curators: Solveig Berg Lofsnes og Olin Steinsvik
This is an exhibition that will run for two seasons; 2025 and 2026.
Some of the works may be replaced during these two years.
