What happens when people stop seeing one another as fellow human beings? As part of the de:HUMANIZE exhibition, we welcome internationally recognized peace worker, Kai Brand-Jacobsen, for a talk on dehumanization, conflict, belonging, and the possibilities for peace in an increasingly polarized world.
Kai Brand-Jacobsen has contributed to peace efforts in war-affected contexts around the world, including Ukraine, Israel-Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, Colombia, Nepal, and Northern Ireland, at the request of the United Nations, governments, and local communities. In recognition of his work, he received the Mahatma Gandhi–Martin Luther King Jr.–Ikeda Lifetime Achievement Award from Morehouse College in 2019 for his service to humanity. His work is also the subject of the documentary movie, In Pursuit of Peace. Today, he serves on the Independent Evaluation Advisory Committee of the International Criminal Court (ICC), is Co-Chair of the OECD-DAC EvalNet Working Group on Conflict and Fragility, and is Senior Adviser in the Independent Evaluation Department of Norwegian Development Cooperation (EVAL) at Norec.
In his talk, Kai will examine the state of the world today and the crisis and conflicts facing us, before exploring dehumanization as a phenomenon and examining what happens when people stop seeing one another as fellow human beings. At the same time, he will draw attention to reasons for hope and practical things we can do both in our own communities and internationally, highlighting effective local, national, and global efforts for peace and human dignity. Following the talk, the audience will be invited to join in conversation and further discussion. The lecture will be delivered in both English and Norwegian, making the event accessible to an international audience as well. Following the talk, artist Terje Grimen will lead a guided tour of the re:HUMANIZE container installation outside the museum. At the same time, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the indoor exhibition and participate in an open poster-making workshop, where they can create their own contributions inspired by the themes of the exhibition and the evening's discussion. Terje Grimen will be present to guide participants in the workshop, and after the tour there will be an opportunity to install new contributions in the container as part of the project's ongoing development.
