During the summer season of 2026, visitors can experience the exhibition a Creative Home in our gallery. Nikolai Astrup is often described as “the painter of home and family.” He frequently depicted his childhood home, the parsonage in Jølster, and when he and Engel Astrup moved to Sandalstrand, their new home also became a central motif in his work.
In the exhibition a Creative Home, you encounter Nikolai Astrup on his home ground, where family life and everyday experience shape and illuminate his art in new ways.
Original art
Our gallery presents a changing programme of exhibitions featuring original works from our own collection, combined with art from other institutions and private owners.
The gallery building contains a reconstruction of Astrup’s own barn, where visitors can experience unique printing blocks and atmospheric woodcuts, as well as a fine selection of richly coloured paintings by Nikolai Astrup. The gallery also displays some of the most beautiful textile prints created by Engel Astrup.
Nikolai Astrup was a pioneer of woodcut printmaking in Norway. After studying in Oslo and Paris, he returned home to depict the landscape of Jølster. Astruptunet houses the largest and most distinctive collection of the artist’s original printing blocks.
In recent years, Engel Astrup’s textile art has gained increased recognition through exhibitions. Her central role at Astruptunet, both as a creative contributor and as the manager of the household, has become an essential part of the museum’s narrative about the Astrup artist home.
The gallery follows the opening hours of Astruptuent. Tickets may be purchased at the café or from the museum host in the gallery. If you are joining a guided tour of the buildings, admission to the gallery is already included in your ticket.
