THE HIDDEN WORLD: FOLK BELIEF AND MAGIC

Stad De Heibergske Samlinger

In the old rural society, people connected beliefs to most kinds of work and to the changing seasons. Ideas about the hulder, the nøkk, and other supernatural beings were very much alive. Without doctors or veterinarians, people had to find their own remedies.

The museum’s unique collection of folk-belief objects, especially those linked to traditional healing, is made accessible to the public through this exhibition. Here you will find cleansing rock crystals, healing knives, curious divination bones, simple Olav crosses, stolen altar wine and mysterious black books.

And even today - can we truly explain everything that lies between heaven and earth?”
