About the museum

«The real voyage of discovery consists, not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes» , M. Proust.

The Norwegian Museum of Travel and Tourism presents the history of modern tourism in Norway.

In the centre of the attractive village of Balestrand, lies one of few museums of its kind worldwide: The Norwegian Museum of Travel and Tourism, showing the development of modern tourism, both in Balestrand and Norway.

The museum offers intriguing architecture from different eras. A distinctive and modern building standing side by side with some of the village’s historic buildings, thus creating a fascinating collective exhibition. The mountain walls inside the main building form a unique space for exhibiting the interesting history of travel in Norway.
