Exhibition: “Hans Dahl – With a Heart for Balestrand”
23 May – 30 September 2026

This summer, the Norwegian Museum of Travel presents the exhibition Hans Dahl – With a Heart for Balestrand, focusing on a prominent, popular, and debated artist within Balestrand’s artists’ colony.

Hans Dahl (1849-1937) gained international recognition for his luminous depictions of fjord landscapes and rural life, often featuring smiling figures in a sunlit and harmonious Norway. While audiences embraced these images, parts of the contemporary art establishment criticised him for being overly romantic and out of step with emerging artistic ideals.

In Balestrand at the end of the nineteenth century, both Dahl’s art and the artists’ colony became part of a broader narrative of Norway as a travel destination. Through Villa Strandheim, garden parties, international networks, and his friendship with Emperor Wilhelm II, Dahl helped place the village on the international map. At the same time, these relationships raise questions about art, power, and representation, particularly in light of the political tensions in Europe leading up to the First World War.

The exhibition features paintings, sketches, photographs, film, and objects, offering an intimate portrait of Hans Dahl: an artist deeply committed to spreading light and joy through his work, but also a conscious communicator who produced images for an international market. In many ways, he was an early marketer—drawing a line from the 1890s to the present day.

Welcome to the opening on 23 May – and to a summer with Hans Dahl!
