What to see and do at Holvikejekta

June marks the opening of a new exhibition hall for the only authentic clinker-built jekt of its kind, Holvikejekta. Some call it the stave church of the sea, built using Viking ship techniques, but served as a freight vessel from 1881 to 1906.

Experience Holvikejekta – a clinker-built freight vessel from 1881 – which truly is one-of-a-kind.

See this beautiful video made by Rakkar, and get to know Holvikejekta.

Holvikejekta has remained on land since 1906, but from 2025 it will finally have a conservation and exhibition hall of its own. A visit here will let you learn about Holvikejekta, the history of jekt sailing in Norway and the importance of jekts for the coastal communities. We also draw parallels to the Nordfjord boats, who’s history in Gloppen go back a thousand years, and you will find a separate exhibition covering this on the mezzanine.

The exhibitions offer historical photographs and texts about the rich history of the jekt. Learn about jekt shipping to Bergen, boat builders and much more.
