Join us from November 24 through December 15 to experience how Christmastime might have looked in the 19th century villages of the Sunnfjord region. Take a tour through the open-air museum grounds and see the Østenstad and Husmann cabins decorated in a traditional style.
Both cabins will be open to the public during our regular visiting hours – Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.. We will also be open from 12-4 p.m. for special Sunday events on November 24, December 8, and December 15.
On your visit, you can take a guided tour into the Østenstad cabin to hear more about Christmas traditions, worklife, foodways, and beliefs and superstitions connected to the holiday season in peasant society. What kinds of Christmas traditions from this historical period do we still practice today? Perhaps you can find out some of the meanings behind the traditions you practice and the reasons they have come to be.
We also welcome you to join in a variety of seasonal activities connected with Christmas celebrations. The activities will vary throughout the season. When you visit, you might find Christmas cardmaking, decorative crafts, mask-making for the traditional «julebukk» (mumming) parade, or baking.
Join us on Sunday, December 15 for a mummers’ parade («julebukk») through the museum village.
We welcome you to bring along a mask or costume. You can make a mask at the museum as part of our seasonal activities.
