Gjendine og Jørgine - frå Bøverdalen til New York (Førdefestivalen World Music Festival)

Time of event -
Stad Sunnfjord Museum

This concert is hosted in collaboration with Førdefestivalen World Music Festival and celebrates the lives and music of two women, Jørgine Boomer (1887-1971) and Gjendine Slålien (1871- 1972). They were both from Bøverdalen in Gudbrandsdalen in Central Norway. Jørgine emigrated to New York City, where she had an influential role in the popular music scene of the day. Gjendine stayed in Bøverdalen, where she worked as a milkmaid for the famous composer Edvard Grieg and became his most important source for folk music. A musical trio illuminates their story and sound in this unique concert.

Camilla Granlien – vocals and storytelling

Alf Hulbækmo – piano

Mari Skeie Ljones – fiddle, vocals

After the concert there will be a guided tour in the exhibit Fiddlers and Funny Ladies: Entertainment in Norwegian America.

Please note that Norwegian will be the primary language of presentation at this event.
