Summer is here, and we are ready for new Activity Days at Sunnfjord Museum!
We invite you to join us on Thursday, July 2, as we bring in horse-power and people-power for a traditional harvest of the hay field at Sunnfjord Museum. Join in and learn to use traditional tools to cut, rake, and hang the hay for drying.
Here's what you can expect on Summer Harvest Day:
All day:
Harvest grass with a scythe, and then rake and hang the grass to dry on a traditional hayrack. No experience needed - our knowledgable museum staff will guide you through the techniques!
Meet representatives from the Norsk Bonde- og Småbrukarlaget (a federation for small-scale farmers). Learn about life as a small-scale farmer in Sunnfjord.
Participate in the Wild Pollinator Count, a community research project to document pollinating insects. Traditional farming methods are gentle on the pollinators which call our hayfields home. It's important to protect these insects so that we can be sure to have new vegetation to harvest in the coming season. Learn to identify native pollinators and join in a nature-based scavenger hunt!
1:30 p.m.: Join in a traditional meal of slåttegraut ("harvest porridge") in the Sersjantløa barn.
2:30 p.m.: Learn about permaculture from Eldrid Skudal, who operates a permaculture farm called Eldrids Skoghage. After the presentation, we'll walk down to the museum's herb garden to learn about the plants that are growing there. (Presentation will be given primarily in Norwegian.)
Welcome, one and all!
