In traditional Norwegian clothing, headgear was as natural as shirts, pants, and jackets. Headgear was, and still is, a visual part of the outfit and had a strong symbolic value. What you wore on your head could tell your social and marital status as well as you were from. Several places in Norway, traditional headgear stayed in daily use longer than other traditional clothing, and traditional headgear were worn with modern clothing into the 20th century.
In this exhibition you can see headgear from large parts of Norway. You can study the similarities, as well as the differences in the large variety from south to north, from the mountains to the fjords.
Headgear and hair fashion in Norwegian clothing tradition is a traveling exhibition produced by the voluntary organisation Norsk folkedraktsforum. Members of 22 regional groups have studied and reproduced local headgear.
Norsk folkedraktsforum works with documenting and researching Norwegian traditional clothing.
