Christmastime at Sunnfjord Museum

Time of event to
Stad Sunnfjord Museum

From November 18 to December 17, you can experience two of our historic homes, Østenstadstova at the tenant farmer's cabin, decorated for Christmastime!

In these cabins you will get a peak into what Christmas Eve and the Christmas season might have looked like in the early and late 1880s. On the tables you will see traditional foods, tablesettings, decor, and lights, surrounded by a room accented with evergreen.

When you purchase a ticket, you receive a pamphlet which tells about the cabins and the Christmas exhibits you will see, as well as about Christmas traditions in the old peasant society. The houses will be open for viewing during museum open hours*, and you can also request a guided tour in order to enter the houses fully. During a guided tour, you will also learn more about the museum and about the other buildings on the museums site

In the pamphlet is also a map of the site with information about the other buildings in the open-air museum. Did you know for example that we have a mountain farm? You can visit it by following the Mostien Trail or the Animal Trail, which start in the main museum grounds.

*The doors into the cabin living spaces are closed with plexiglass. If there is bad weather, we may also close the outer doors. You can always request a tour with our staff in the reception.

Join in Activity Days on December 7 and 14, 10am - 3pm! Enjoy coffee, waffles, gløgg (a hot Christmas beverage), and gingerbread. There will be a Christmas craft workshop in the Huus cabin where you can enjoy needlefelting and make Christmas decorations.

Gamalt lafta trehus dekka av rimfrost og med skråtak dekka av snø. Stearinlys i vindauget på huset. Vinterlandskap.
We welcome you to experience a historical Christmas at Sunnfjord Museum! And perhaps there will be snow, like in this photo from 2022.
Important information

In November and December, there will be renovations going on in the main visitor center at Sunnfjord Museum, and this building will be closed to visitors. Our reception and museum shop will therefore be temporarily relocated to the Halbrend cabin (a white building up the hill from the visitor center - look for signs). You can buy tickets in the Halbrend cabin - remember that purchase of a ticket is required to enter the museum area during opening hours.

Bathrooms are available next to the Halbrend cabin.

Welcome one and all to Christmastime at Sunnfjord Museum!
