Summer Solstice Celebration

Time of event -
Stad Sunnfjord Museum

Sunnfjord Museum and Sunde Neighborhood Association invite you to a traditional summer solstice celebration!

The summer solstice, known localled as "jonsok," is one of our great annual gatherings. The celebration features a traditional mock-wedding, boat race, bonfire, grilling, cafe and cake sale, and an overall atmosphere of fun for the whole family.

Program (subject to change)

5:00 p.m. The event begins. Grills are available near the beachfront - remember to bring your own food to throw on the grill. Open cafe with cake for sale in the Sersjanløa barn.

6:00 p.m. The jonsok mock-bridal party parades through the museum yard, accompanied by musicians.

7:00 p.m. Boat race "Ta sjansen" (Take a chance) begins at the beachfront
In the 1980s and 90s, an TV program aired in Norway which featured a creative race down the Olympic ski jump Holmenkollbakken and into a lake at the base of the jump. Teams constructed their own bobsled-boat to race down the jump, and hilarity ensured. Here at Sunnfjord Museum, we recreate this competition with a 12-meter ramp down which teams fly, landing in the lake Movatnet, where they ring a bell to complete their run.
Prizes are given for various achievements:
-Fastest to the bell
-Most creative boat
-Greatest fiasco
-Crowd favorite

Registration for the competition is run by Sunde Neighborhood Association. The deadline to register is June 1, and is capped at 15 teams. Contact Sunde Neighborhood Association at sunde.grendalag@gmail.com for more information.
